I have an exciting update for those of you who are creating their own educational resources and selling them on TeachersPayTeachers or other platforms: I am now offering commercial licenses for my School Cursive font family.
If you have already purchased some or all of my cursive fonts on TPT, for just $5 you can purchase a license to use these fonts commercially in one of your own TPT resource of up to 100 pages. To use the fonts in multiple TPT resources, you will need to purchase multiple licenses. If you want to use my fonts commercially outside of the TPT platform, you can do so with the Desktop license available through FontSpring.
Below I'll explain my pricing and the reasons behind it.
Comparing licenses
When I investigated various font platforms, I found huge differences in the terms and conditions for "Desktop" licenses on different platforms. If you buy a desktop license on fonts.com, you are not allowed to sell or give away PDF documents containing the fonts. The fonts.com desktop license may be great if you're a graphic designer creating logos, coffee mugs or t-shirts, but useless for somebody who wants to create educational resources (and sell them). Fonts.com does offer eBook licenses, but I feel the prices for those are way too high (per eBook!) compared to the desktop licenses.
So I've decided to go with FontSpring.com. Their desktop license clearly and explicitly allows the purchaser to embed the font in PDF documents and to distribute these PDF documents commercially.
FontSpring pricing
After comparing prices of fonts with similar features to mine (such as dynamic connections) - and after being surprised how prices did not seem to depend on the rather large differences in license terms I encountered - I've decided to go with a price of $49 for a single font, and $120 for the entire family.
TPT pricing
While I know my font is worth the price I've set on FontSpring.com, I'm also aware that this price is far above what you'd commonly find on TPT for commercial font licenses. It might be quite a "gamble" for beginning teacher-authors to invest so much money in a font without knowing if the resource they plan to create will sell.
Therefore, for TeachersPayTeachers I've decided to sell a special, cheap license that does not give unlimited PDF distribution rights like FontSpring.com does, but allows the purchaser to use the font in one single TPT resource. This license has a very modest cost of $5. This license can only be used as an add-on to the personal/educational license that people can already purchase on TPT.
A teacher who was already purchased my fonts for personal/educational use and has been creating resources for their own classroom can now for the very modest investment of $5 upload their resource to TPT and try to sell it. Only a few sales will be enough to earn back the cost of the license.
